Error correction in processing complex-shape surfaces on machining centres

Abstract

The present paper is devoted to the issues connected with correcting errors in processing curvilinear surfaces produced with the use of CNC milling machines. At present, such a correction is performed with two methods. The first of them, called an on-line method, requires constant correcting of the tool path during processing. In this approach, it is necessary to apply sophisticated adaptive control systems. In the second, off-line method, correcting the programme which controls the processing is performed outside the machine tool (on the basis of the control measurement results). The paper presents a suggestion of a methodology for correcting surface processing errors using the off-line technique (without a constant direct connection to a CNC milling machine). The suggested methodology is based on using CAD/CAM systems, numerically controlled milling machines, and coordinate measuring machines. The suggested procedure was verified on the example of a curvilinear surface described with the NURBS method. Implementing the suggested methodology of correcting processing errors resulted in a significant improvement in the accuracy of the produced shape surface.
